Shinya Sugawara is an art critic based in Tokyo. His major area of study is contemporary art and the relationship between art and politics. He is currently researching art and migration. He has written exhibition reviews for Bijutsutecho and Tokyo Art Beat, and essays such as “Tania Bruguera, or the Expanded Concept of Participatory Art” (ART RESEARCH ONLINE) and “Intersection of identification and disidentification: Around the works of Santiago Sierra” (Pan no Pan 4 vol.3 forthcoming). He has also interviewed artists and curators like Yuki Okumura(in 2016)and Hans Ulrich Obrist (in 2020) .
